There was a garden on the rooftop of First High. In the winter, various flowers and herbs that repelled bugs were planted in tiered flower beds inside a greenhouse.

It was sunny and still on this day, and despite it being an early April evening, the rooftop was neither hot nor cold, but comfortably warm. Like being immersed in a pool of lukewarm water.

It was precisely this sunny weather that must have lulled her to sleep—a pedigreed cat was napping on a rooftop bench. Saburou couldn’t help but stop and stare at the cat’s unusually striking appearance. She had a long, slender body and light semi-long hair that curled at the ends. Even with her eyes closed and her arms half-buried under a pillow, she clearly had a well-defined face. In every respect, she was truly a thoroughbred. Of course, this cat was actually a First High student.

The girl’s face was more mature than Shiina’s. Saburou assumed she was a couple of years older. She was lying on her right side, meaning the left shoulder of her uniform was visible. Just like Saburou’s uniform, it didn’t sport an eight-petaled emblem. In other words, this girl was an older Course 2 student.

After admiring the girl in her sleep for about ten seconds, Saburou suddenly came to his senses. His first thought was, Maybe I should wake her up.

Spring had just begun. It may be warm now, but the temperatures would almost certainly drop as the sun went down. The wind could even pick up. Lying on the rooftop at this time of year was a surefire way to catch a cold.

But just as he was about to shake the girl’s shoulder, he began to worry his intentions might be misunderstood. Right now, the two of them were the only ones on the rooftop. When she woke up, she might mistake him for a pervert. Or a Peeping Tom who enjoyed watching girls sleep.

Saburou stopped in his tracks, then slowly backed away. Once he decided he was far enough away to avoid being mistaken for a pervert, he ripped his eyes away from the older girl and turned toward the rooftop door.

“You don’t have to run away.”

A voice called out from the bench he had just been watching. Saburou stiffened, as if he had just been caught in a mischievous act. Barely turning his head back around, he saw the girl pushing herself up.

Ignoring Saburou’s suspicious behavior, she stretched her arms into the air. Again, just like a house cat. But when she lowered her arms and gazed at Saburou, her eyes had an intensity more akin to a tiger or panther.

“Relax. I don’t think you’re a pervert. You tried to wake me up so I wouldn’t catch a cold, didn’t you?”

“U-um, maybe…” Saburou replied sheepishly.

The girl had both taken him off guard and known exactly what he was up to. The shock of it all made his tongue and entire body feel rusty.
